Metro Transit light-rail train operators tell legislators of safety fears

Metro Transit light-rail operators Wednesday told state lawmakers that they often fear for their safety during their shifts at Metropolitan Council, according to Star Tribune.
Star Tribune reported that two train operators Jerry Ziegler and Honey Darling gave testimony as to the worries at work and Rep. Paul Torkelson proposed a new bill that would hire an independent assessment of the public safety audit for light-rail trains.

Star Tribune reported that two train operators Jerry Ziegler and Honey Darling gave testimony as to the worries at work and Rep. Paul Torkelson proposed a new bill that would hire an independent assessment of the public safety audit for light-rail trains.
The operators see people sleeping and criminal behavior, including drug and alcohol use and verbal and physical assaults. Darling appealed that Metro Transit police often are not available for help in a timely manner, Star Tribune reported.
“It’s really important this system works well and that people feel safe,” Torkelson said, according to Star Tribune.
According to Metro Transit, average violent crime on a serious level on public transit increased by 29% in 2019, Star Tribune reported.
