First human-to-human transmission of coronavirus In U.S. documented in Illinois
By Jane Lee
According to Star Tribune, health officials Thursday reported the first U.S case of person-to-person transmission of the new coronavirus from China.
The patient is the husband of a Chicago woman who got sick after she returned from a trip to Wuhan, China, on Jan. 13, and the new case is the sixth in the United State. The husband and wife are hospitalized, Star Tribune reported.
Officials with the state and with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the man did not use public transportations, have casual contacts or attend any gatherings, Star Tribune reported.
Health officials said the virus spreads through droplet infection when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious diseases expert, said, “The kind of contact that you have in a household is very close and very prolonged. That’s the kind of circumstance where we would anticipate a virus such as this could be transmitted," according to Star Tribune.
Star Tribune reported that the monitored symptoms are fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia among the families of the infected patients of the virus.
