Vote blocks demolition of 130-year-old Minneapolis relic

The Oakland apartment at 213-215 S. Ninth St., which is one of the oldest surviving buildings in downtown, Minneapolis, could be demolished, but Minneapolis City Council members voted to block it on Thursday.

The owner of the building, which was constructed by local architect Harry Wild Jones in 1889, had tried to tear down the building, but the city's committee doesn't allow it because it can be a landmark of the city which brings the historic tax credits for remodeling due to its Richardsonian Romanesque style, Council member Lisa Goodman, said.

Currently, representative owner Dave Gonyea expressed they just want the building to be sold to someone who would like to rehab, but there are some parts hard to be repaired since it was ravaged by a fire in 2016.

Based on the result of the vote on Thursday, the City Council decides to study more about its historical designation, Star Tribune reported.
