St. Paul restaurants brace for restrictions on takeout containers

The St. Paul City Council is planning to ban non-recyclable takeout containers at restaurants in St. Paul from Jan. 1, 2021, Star Tribune reported.
During a year's pause after Council members voted in 2017, they were crafting a policy to prohibits black carryout containers and Styrofoam cups for the environment in St. Paul like Minneapolis and St. Louis Park area. The council will hold a public hearing Mar. 6, and is expected to vote the same day, Star Tribune reported.
According to Star Tribune, Dan Niziolek, deputy director of the city’s Department of Safety and Inspections, said city officials will help restaurants to conect to financial and technical helps for business transition. However, some owners are concerned about the transition due to the expensive cost of reusable containers.
Don Thompson, a manager at Goody’s Hot City Pizza on W. 7th Street, said “We just raised prices a little while ago. We just can’t again,” Star Tribune reported.
