Sierra Leone's president declares rape a 'national emergency'

By Jane Lee

Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio claimed sexual abuse toward minors, especially rape, is a "national emergency," on Thursday at the State House in the capital, Freetown, Star Tribune reported.

Sexual violence cases in Sierra Leone have been increasing since 2015, according to police figures. Activists and First Lady Fatima Bio led the announcement and Bio promised his government would enforce strict laws for rape and any sexual-based crimes.

Both the president and first lady have supported the "Hands Off Our Girls" campaign which aims to end sexual violence toward women and children, Star Tribune reported.
He encouraged citizens to fight for the recovery of "pride and dignity" of women and girls in the country.
