Minneapolis to require home sellers to test for energy efficiency

The City Council approved the tests for energy efficiency, which will be required from 2020, for homeowners who want to sell their properties in order to reach the city's sustain goal on Friday, Star Tribune reported.

The tests would be a part of the basic inspection when selling home. Particularly, homes built before 1980 need to be drilled a hole in walls to check for insulation, Star Tribune reported.

Council member Jermy Schroeder said energy disclosures will save not only homeowners' money, but also fight climate change and bring a market incentive for homeowners to improve their properties at Friday's council meeting.

When a home goes up on sale, the inspection must be conducted by licensed professionals within three days with options for energy efficiency, Star Tribune reported.
